Description

This online course is designed to help support and care workers build confidence, understanding and compassion when working with people diagnosed under the age of 65. The course explains dementia in clear, plain language and explores the different types of dementia, how symptoms present and progress and the unique challenges associated with younger onset dementia. Learners will gain practical skills in recognising behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), using person-centred communication, supporting dignity and wellbeing and responding to increased vulnerability, risk, and changing care needs. With a strong focus on ethical, respectful and individualised care, this course equips workers with strategies they can apply immediately to support both individuals and their families across disability and aged care settings.

Objectives

This course covers:

  • Understanding dementia and younger onset dementia in plain language

  • Types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, FTD, Lewy body dementia and mixed dementia

  • How dementia affects memory, behaviour, emotions, communication and physical abilities

  • Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) and person-centred responses

  • Disease progression and changing support needs across early, middle and late stages

  • The impact of younger onset dementia on work, family life, identity and wellbeing

  • Person-centred care, dignity, communication and cultural considerations

  • Individualised care planning, safety, documentation and recognising risk and vulnerability
