Boundaries, Communication & Challenging Interactions in Disability Support

This online course supports disability support workers to build the knowledge, confidence and communication skills needed to maintain professional boundaries and manage challenging interactions safely and respectfully. The course explores the nature of professional boundaries, the difference between boundary crossings and boundary violations, and the factors that can cause boundaries to blur, including compassion fatigue, family pressure and organisational culture. It provides practical strategies for responding to distressed, demanding or high-pressure family interactions, including active listening, de-escalation techniques and professional language for saying no and managing emotional manipulation. Participants also learn when and how to escalate concerns, the importance of adhering to care plans, risk plans and organisational policy, and how to complete professional and accurate documentation, enabling them to support participants and their families in a way that upholds safety, trust and the NDIS Code of Conduct.
